The Great Escape begins at West Street as Shaun Hayden takes over as Chatteris Town chairman

THE great West Street revival got under way this week as former player Shaun Hayden took over as chairman of Chatteris Town.

The 34-year-old is planning to reinvigorate the Lilies, who are yet to win this season and sit bottom of the Kershaw Premier League.

He is hoping to secure sponsorship from several firms, which would allow the club to stop charging the players match day subs.

Former chairman Steve Bright, who will remain in charge of the first team with Leigh Matthews, said he was happy to step aside as it was “in the best interests of the club”.

He said: “Shaun is going to do a lot on the commercial side. There are two or three backers who will put some money into the club.

“The main aim is to try and get the clubhouse finished. There’s a big extension that has been sitting there for five or six years and we need to get that done.

“We’ve come to a crossroads where we have to try and push on and Shaun is the man to help us do that.”

Bright said that he hoped the changes might tempt former players to return to West Street.

“It is still possible to avoid relegation,” he said. “It’s a long season.”
