Mark Laws kicked the only points of a tight first half in which both sides lost a man to the sin-bin.

The hosts withstood some early Sudbury pressure in the second half and extended their lead through a converted try from fly-half Will Pettit.

Centre Jon Turner then burst through Sudbury’s defence to score Wisbech’s second try and Laws’ conversion made it 17-0.

Wisbech spurned good scoring opportunities late in the game and Sudbury nicked a consolation try but the hosts ran out comfortable winners.

Manager Cliff Humphreys said: “A win is a win. We always looked to be in control of the game and should have scored more tries.

“I thought the pack as a unit played very well and dominated the game. Flanker Nathan Goodale who is only 17 years old impressed and is certainly one for the future.”

Wisbech face Sudbury again tomorrow in London North-East Division Three and Humphreys is expecting a tough trip.

He said: “It will be a difficult encounter as Sudbury only travelled with 16 players and showed that they have pace in the backs.

“We must improve our discipline as we cannot keep giving away penalties and yellow cards.”

• MARCH Bears Legends beat St Neots 17-14 at Elm Road Sports Field.

St Neots raced into an early lead with a converted try but March responded with an interception try from Stewart Rigby. Scrum-half Jason Mottram edged the hosts ahead when he picked up the ball from the base of a ruck and darted over.

Kris Feaviour showed his pace to score March’s third try after the break and Jonathan Beavis nailed the conversion to put them 17-7 clear.

The visitors scored another try but March held on to secure a thrilling win.
