CAPTAIN Chris Ringham bowled with a broken finger to help March end their losing run - but the injury will keep him out for four weeks.

The seamer was stunned on Monday when doctors told him he had a “severe crack” in the knuckle of the little finger on his left hand. He had suffered the injury more than a week earlier, during March’s defeat to Foxton.

Unaware of the break, Ringham played again on Saturday... and took two wickets as March beat Godmanchester to record their first Tucker Gardner Premier Division win since May 12.

He said: “I could see my finger wasn’t straight so I got it checked out and they told me it was a break. I still managed to play at the weekend!

“I’m devastated. You wait all winter to play and then suddenly you’re told you can’t.

“I think I’m bowling quite well and I feel like I’ve got a big, match-winning spell in me so it’s very frustrating.

“We’ve got a lot riding on the next few weeks and I’ll miss the Wisbech game. I’ll watch but I’ve never been a good spectator.”

News of Ringham’s injury came after March shrugged off their four-game losing run in the league on Saturday.

Godmanchester folded for a dismal 95 at The Avenue, with Callum Young, who claimed 10 wickets in the weekend, doing most of the damage.

The seamer took 4-27 to announce himself as a likely replacement for his injured captain, while Ringham, Tyler Phillips and Ryan Meyer also claimed two scalps.

Reeling at 33-5 in reply, it looked as though March’s batting nightmare might continue but solid knocks from Matty Vail (31) and Ben Pyle (32 not out) helped them home.

Ringham said: “It was nice to stop the rot. The bowlers did their job and, although the batsman made hard work of it, we got there.”

Wicket-keeper John Gilson will take charge of the side in Ringham’s absence, starting with a trip to Ramsey tomorrow.

Ringham said: “John’s 56 so you don’t get much more experienced than that! He’ll do a good job.”
