CHATTERIS’ teenage hockey star Georgia Harrison has revealed that the London 2012 Olympics helped inspire her to fulfil her England dream.

Harrison, 15, first picked up a stick at March Town Hockey Club when she was just four years old.

But last week she was confirmed as one of 23 youngsters who have been selected for England Girls Under-16s.

“It hasn’t quite sunk in yet,” she said. “I’m really excited about playing for my country but really nervous.

“I went to see the Olympics twice in the summer and got to watch TeamGB play hockey both times. I was very lucky and it showed me where I could be.

“It inspired me to think that I could be playing in something like that in a few years.”

The midfielder, a student at King’s School, Peterborough, has played at county and regional level. She has been attending national trials since January.

“It has been an ongoing process,” she said. “At my last trial there were 37 of us and that had to be cut down to a final squad of 23.

“I couldn’t believe it when I heard I had made it. I had my phone off because I didn’t think I would hear back so quickly.

“It was a massive surprise and I was really excited.”

The teenager, who now plays for Leicester Ladies, is the latest talent in a hockey-mad family - parents Rob and Lindsey play for City of Peterborough.

She will represent her country in a series of training matches before making her competitive international debut in the Four Nations at Easter.

Harrison said: “I’ve grown up with hockey and I love it. I just can’t wait to get all the England kit now!”
