WISBECH Rugby Club celebrated their return to London North-East Division Three in fine style on Saturday as they ran in six tries against Harlow.
Wisbech looked rusty in the first quarter of the match as a lack of any pre-season preparation told and the early pressure applied by the visitors bore fruit in the 20th minute as they broke through the line to score under the posts.
But the setback served to spur Wisbech on - the forwards started to dominate and won the ball and scrum half Andy Claydon was able to link up with the backs, who started to show their class.
Wisbech levelled the scores when winger Joe Barfoot outpaced the defence and slid under the posts, with re-signed full back Mark Laws adding the conversion.
The home side continued to press forward and, from a scrum, took control the ball, wining a couple of phases before feeding out to prop James Griffin to crash over.
From the kick off, Wisbech continued to press home their advantage and scored their third of day when Claydon kicked high for winger Shane Vickers to collect and run over into the corner. Laws slotted over an excellent conversion before adding a penalty.
Barfoot then showed his speed once again as Harlow began to tire. He was too quick for the Harlow defence scoring his second converted try under the posts.
Mark Laws rounded off an excellent personal performance by adding a further two tries, both of which he converted to secure a valuable bonus point.
“It was an exhilarating performance” said club manager Cliff Humphreys. “There has been some solid work during training and I must thank Luke Feaviour and Phil Webb and the rest of the team for their help.
“There are one or two thing we need to work on but if we can maintain this level of performance throughout the season we will be a match for anyone in this league.”
