George Russell made a fine fightback from qualifying disaster to claim a podium finish in the latest round of the BRDC Formula 4 Championship at Brands Hatch and retain his points lead.

With six races remaining, he leads Lanan Racing team-mate Arjun Maini by nine points and Raoul Hyman, of HHC Motorsport, by 13 points.

The 16-year-old was on his first hot lap in qualifying when he damaged his Lanan machine, meaning he started the first race from the back of the 21-car field.

Russell battled through the field to finish 10th in race one.

In race two, he produced an impressive drive to come through from 10th to finish third. In the final race, he set the fastest lap but had to settle for fifth.

Russell said: “Overall it’s a bit disappointing because we had the speed for another podium. But the positive thing is that I managed to hold onto the lead of the championship, with only two rounds to go.”

The next round is at Donington Park on September 20-21. Before then, Russell resumes his Formula Renault ALPS campaign with next weekend’s event at Mugello in Italy.
