MANAGER Brett Whaley says March Town United’s week-long stay at the top of the Ridgeons First Division has given them an appetite for more success.

The Hares, who have won seven of their last eight games, enjoyed a brief spell in top-spot before rivals Godmanchester Rovers and Whitton United leapfrogged them at the weekend.

Whaley said: “There’s a lot been made of the fact that we went top of the league for a while but there was a buzz around the place.

“We never expected to be at the top at any point this season - that wasn’t in the script. I will challenge the players from now on, can they get back there?”

March, who were without a game on Saturday, have been forced to abandon their plans for a mid-week friendly with Whittlesey United due to a waterlogged pitch at the GER.

But the Hares will be at full strength for their trip to bottom-of-the-table Stowmarket Town on Saturday.

Whaley said: “It’s very easy for people to look at league tables and presume results. We’ve had games where we’ve taken things for granted and we can’t do that.

“Having a week off doesn’t sound a lot, but it does take that sharpness away. We need to stamp our authority on the game quickly.”

• March Town United Reserves were dumped out of the North Cambs Junior Cup by Guyhirn on Saturday. The Hares’ second string lost 4-3 on penalties at the GER, after Lee White’s strike and an own goal had given them a 2-2 draw in normal time.
