BACKSTROKE sensation Liam Knight smashed his personal best as he produced an eye-catching display at the British Gas International Swimming Meet.

The teenage star, from Wisbech, powered into his first British International final by winning his heat in the 200m backstroke in a stunning time of 2:01.55.

The performance trimmed about two seconds off his personal best and prompted some commentators to hail it as “the swim of the day”.

Knight finished sixth in the final with another impressive swim at the John Charles Centre for Sport, in The City of Peterborough Swimming Club ace clocked 2:01.76 in a close finish, with winner Chris Walker-Hebborn - who is four years older than Knight - winning in 1:59.06.
