WISBECH swimmer Liam Knight has been accepted onto the England elite training programme focusing on the next Olympics.

The 18 year old backstroke sensation, who swims for City of Peterborough club (COPS) and is coached by Ben Negus, has been identified as one of a small selection of athletes who have the potential to reach a final and secure a medal at Rio de Janiero.

He will get £2,000 a year funding, invitations to training camps and access to a physio, bio mechanist and nutritionist.

Knight, who hopes to make his mark at this summer’s national trials, is thrilled to have been included on the elite programme.

He said: “It’s going to make a big difference to my career and it has definitely given me a massive confidence boost.”

Knight produced a series of eye-catching displays at the British Gas International Swimming Meet.

He smashed four personal best times in four races and powered into three finals.

The teenage star will be put on his own tailored strength and conditioning programme and will receive altitude training.

His progress will be reviewed every year and he will have to show development to maintain his place in the elite group.
