Wisbech Town are through to the quarter finals of the Cambs Invitation Cup after a 6-0 rout of Cambridge University Press at the Elgood’s Fenland Stadium last night.
Lewis Clayton, Danny White and Tom James bagged braces in the one sided encounter.
A devastating Fenmen burst of five goals in 14 minutes ended the game as a contest before half-time.
Clayton broke the deadlock on the half hour mark.
White’s through ball was not dealt with properly and the young winger calmly stroked the ball into the bottom left hand corner from the right side of the box.
Two minutes later Clayton turned provider as his inviting cross was tapped in from close range by the onrushing White.
James got in on the act on 34 minutes, playing a neat one-two with Tony Battersby before finishing at the second attempt.
White made it 4-0 on 36 minutes when he reacted quickest and slotted in the rebound after Battersby’s initial effort was saved by Ashley Gillings.
On 44 minutes, Clayton nodded home the industrious Kieron Doherty’s deep inswinging cross.
Wisbech lost their way in the second half and the visitors had a golden chance to score when Ryan Dennis brought down Sefa Atay in the box.
But Atay was made to look foolish as his dinked penalty harmlessly floated over the bar.
James grabbed the goal of the game with 12 minutes remaining.
The young striker controlled the ball on his chest with his back to goal 25 yards out, turned the defender and drilled an unstoppable low shot into the bottom right hand corner.
