Wisbech Town joint boss Dick Creasey says his side can cause an upset when they host runaway leaders Spalding United on Saturday.

Big spending Spalding are 16 points clear at the top of the United Counties League – they have won 23 of their 24 games this season.

They have picked up 30 more points than seventh-placed Wisbech, but Creasey says his side will relish the challenge.

He said: “All of Spalding’s players would be comfortable playing at a higher level but we want to test ourselves against the best and give them a good game.

“They are short of football as well so it will be a case of whoever can get out of the traps the quickest.

“We need to put in a performance so we are ready for our FA Vase game the following week.”

Wisbech lost 2-1 to Huntingdon Town at home in the last 16 of the UCL Knockout Cup on Tuesday.

It was the Fenmen’s first game since they beat Ashington in the FA Vase on January 18.

Wisbech, with the returning Stuart Cobb in their ranks, took the lead after seven minutes through midfielder Adam Millson.

Tom James’ shot was fumbled by the Huntingdon keeper and Millson reacted quickest to tap it in from close range.

The hosts went into half time 1-0 up but, after the break, were forced to play into a strengthening wind.

The Fenmen held on until the 76th minute but then shipped two goals in three minutes, the second straight from a corner, to tumble out of the cup.

Joint boss Dick Creasey said: “As a spectacle, it was a poor game to watch and, the players said afterwards, to play in.

“There was a strong wind that went straight down the pitch. We had the best of the first half but to be one goal up was not enough.

“They had the better of the second half but the fact their second goal came direct from a corner that caught the wind says it all.”
