Despite coming across as a children’s movie, there’s far more to Disney’s latest heartstring-tugging animation ‘Coco’ than meets the eye.

Going against his family’s baffling generations-old ban on music, a sprightly Miguel - with his adorable dog best friend Dante - dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz.

Visually eye-popping, the streets of Mexico and later the Land of the Dead - a place where Miguel ends up having been desperate to prove his talent and following a mysterious chain of events - come alive with vibrant colours and ‘Avatar’-like creatures. As the story takes a darker turn, Miguel strives to uncover his family’s true history with the help of charming trickster Hector... but all is not as it seems.

Like ‘Inside Out’ and ‘Moana’, there are serious topics at ‘Coco’s heart including death and the importance of family - the scenes with Miguel’s great grandma are genuinely moving and tear-jerking. It’ll put a lump in the throat of anyone who’s lost a close relative.
