Nine special produce and craft markets are being held in Fenland in the run up to Christmas.
The craft stalls are being trialled to work out the potential for this style of market in Chatteris, March and Whittlesey.
The first will take place in Chatteris on Friday, October 11.
A series of other extra attractions are being organised as part of the ongoing Love your Local Fenland Market promotion which is designed to raise the profile of town-centre markets and attract new business into the district.
These include a Make a Guy event in March market on November 2 in advance of Bonfire Night on November 5.
Local schoolchildren are invited to make a guy and bring it along to be judged at the market, with prizes for the best three. There will also be a craft activity for children on the day.
The following Saturday, November 9, there will be free sausage tasting in March to mark National Sausage Week.
Other seasonal events in March will include the town’s first-ever Christmas Market on December 8 and carol singing on December 14 and 21.
There are plans for special Christmas Eve markets in March and Chatteris.
Councillor Pop Jolley, Fenland District Council’s portfolio holder responsible for markets, said: “We are making a concerted effort to give all our town-centre markets a boost and encourage local producers and craftsmen to take advantage of the extra opportunities on offer to them.
“We want to refocus attention on the value of local community markets. Not only do they offer local traders an outlet for their products and give shoppers a different kind of experience to that found in supermarkets; they also help to attract people from outside into the towns and bring extra trade to other shops and businesses.
“In the past flourishing markets have been at the heart of local community life and we want to revive that in all our towns.”
The trial local produce and craft markets are offering traders pitches, with gazebos if required, for £15 per market. As a bonus, those stallholders who book slots at all nine markets will get one free.
All traders will be required to send in proof of public and, if applicable, product liability insurance. Food businesses will have to provide evidence that they are registered with their local council.
