Fans of the English composer Sir Edward Elgar can mark the 80th anniversary of his death on Sunday February 23 by attending a performance of his Organ Sonata in G major at Peterborough Cathedral.

This special performance of the half hour long Sonata will be played on the magnificent Hill organ at the Cathedral by Assistant Director of Music, David Humphreys.

David was the organist who played for the much acclaimed BBC Radio 3 live broadcast of Choral Evensong from Peterborough Cathedral earlier this year.

“The Cathedral organ is the perfect instrument for this wonderful piece,” says David. “It was built in 1894, the year before Elgar wrote his Sonata, and the glorious sounds it has bring out the best in the music – it’s a bit like listening to a whole orchestra rather than just one person!”

The Organ Sonata recital takes place on Sunday February 23 at 5pm, shortly after Choral Evensong which begins at 3.30pm. All are welcome and there is no charge for entry. Donations will be invited.
