Flypasts, living history, swinging 60s and clairvoyance at Chatteris Midsummer Festival

CHATTERIS Midsummer Festival takes place next week with events for all the family over five days.

a The fun kicks off on Wednesday with an evening of clairvoyance with Vivien Powell and Donna Taylor in the marquee on Furrowfields recreation ground, starting at 7.30pm.

On Thursday, the New Wolsey Theatre Company performs Ours Was the Fen Country in the marquee. It starts at 7.45pm and tickets are £10 (£8 concessions).

Friday is schools living history day at Furrowfields, with talks, demonstrations and activities on a historical theme.

In the evening it’s Disco Inferno, with music from the 60s and 70s in the marquee from 7.30pm. Tickets are £5 in advance, £7 on the door, with fancy dress encouraged.

Saturday, June 29, is the main day of the festival.

Gates to Furrowfields open at 10am, with living history encampments, stalls, funfair rides and demonstrations throughout the day.

The parade leaves Church Lane car park at 11am and heads to the field via Market Hill and High Street. The theme for this year’s parade is Over the Rainbow or Songs of the 60s. To take part, call Mrs Melton

From 5.30pm it’s Party in the Park, with local singers and bands entertaining the crowds. Performances are from 5.30-11pm and entry is £1.

Highlights on June 30 include a fun dog show (11am, registration from 10am), tug of war competitions (teams of six, £1 per person) and an It’s a Knockout competition (tams of six to eight, £1 per person). Registration for the tug of war and It’s a Knockout must be made in advance by calling Mrs Melton.

Weather permitting, a Hawker Hurricane will fly overhead on the Saturday and an Avro Lancster from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight on the Sunday.
