READING the Wisbech Standard aboard ship in 1955 are Ordinary Seaman John Batterbee, left, and Able Seaman Stanley Laws, both of Wisbech, who were serving on HMS Jamaica in Malta.

In a letter to the editor, the two sailors said when they received their next edition they hoped it would feature the photograph of themselves.

For 17-year-old John Batterbee, of Elm Low Road, joining the Navy was a boyhood ambition. He joined after leaving Wisbech Grammar School where he was a successful footballer and athlete.

Mrs Batterbee sent her son the Standard every three weeks. John was a keen reader of the sports pages, especially following the football news and greyhound racing results. He had a greyhound of his own at home in Wisbech.
