I REFER to Reg Wenn's letter (Cambs Times March 9), and we must ensure that all statements therein are correct.
He claims that 0.9 per cent of council tax should be removed as it was imposed to pay for the mayoral referendum. This was in the last financial year. The 0.9 per cent of the 3.9 per cent increase for the year 2007/08 is to fund local government elections due to be held in May.
Government legislation regarding elections has imposed considerable burdens on all councils.
In order to facilitate the new process for postal voting Fenland District Council will incur a new expense of more than £50,000; equivalent to one per cent of Council Tax.
However, it was kind of Mr Wenn to acknowledge the awards received by staff at Fenland Hall from various government bodies. Several services supplied from Fenland Hall have been awarded either Beacon Status or held up as models of good practice in the wider local government arena.
The members and staff of Fenland District Council are justifiably proud of these achievements.
