Cambridgeshire County Council tweeted that diversions were in place.

According to the Environment Agency website, the river level at the causeway was 2.43m at 12.45pm yesterday, above its typical range of 0.46m to 2.40m.

Cambridgeshire County Council said the river is expected to rise further.

Julie Foley, EA area manager, said “We are working closely with Norfolk County Council who make decisions on road closures. I would urge motorists not to ignore the road closed signs.

“Floodwater can be dangerous and just 30cm of flowing water is enough to move an average family car.”

The Environment Agency Operations Team are monitoring rivers levels and working hard to ensure water can drain off the Washes as quickly as possible.

The EA has been checking Welmore Lake Sluice on a daily basis while water levels have been rising to ensure it is able to discharge as much water as possible.
