Community groups in 10 Fenland villages - and one town - have been urged to apply for grants from three separate funds set up when wind turbines were agreed for their areas.

“Grants are again on offer from three wind farm developments to help local community groups improve their environment,” said a spokesman for Fenland Council.

•The Glassmoor Local Environment Fund has money available for groups from Whittlesey, Pondersbridge, Ramsey Mereside, Eastrea and Coates. Any applications in the latest bidding process must be in by January 3.

•The Whitemill Environment Fund has grants for groups in Coldham, Ring’s End, Friday Bridge and Elm. Its closing date for bids is February 1.

•The Ransonmoor Environment Fund is open to groups from Benwick, Wimblington and Doddington. Applications must be in by February 3.

The spokesman said: “All bids for the funding must clearly demonstrate the project’s environmental benefit but a wide range of schemes could be eligible, including ones promoting energy efficiency, wildlife conservation, waste recycling and car sharing. “Other ideas are welcome.”

In September, the Ransonmoor Fund committee approved bids from each of its three villages. The successful projects were for nature enhancements to a churchyard (Benwick), water butts for allotments (Wimblington) and LED lighting (Doddington).

Recent awards from the Glassmoor and Whitemill funds have been for environmental education. Glassmoor has also given a grant for volunteer training, tools and information boards at Lattersey nature reserve.

Most of the grants on offer are between £500 and £3,000.
