Fenland’s Golden Age Fairs continued to go from strength to strength this week as almost 120 people turned out for the latest event in Wisbech.
The council’s Golden Age team were joined by more than 40 partner organisations and charities to offer a whole host of advice and support for older residents at the Queen Mary Centre on Monday, September 10.
The free event, which is held four times a year, is designed to help the over 60s discover what benefits and services they’re entitled to, and also provides an opportunity for people to get together for a cuppa and chat.
As well as advice from charities including Age UK, the Carers Trust, Breath Easy, Diabetes UK and Alzheimer’s UK, there was also information on the support available from organisations such as Care Network Cambridgeshire, Everyone Health, the Royal British Legion and Cambridgeshire County Council’s adult early help team.
There were also activity tasters from Active Fenland, health and blood pressure checks from New Vision Fitness staff, and Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue offered a free electric blanket exchange for the over 65s.
The Fenland Ferret – a computer programme that ferrets out unclaimed benefits – was also in action again offering free benefits checks.
Visitors also enjoyed complimentary tea, coffee and cake and received a free Golden Age canvas shopping bag.
Councillor Mike Cornwell, the council’s cabinet member responsible for Golden Age, said: “We’ve been running the fairs for many years now and they’re as popular as ever. Every time we hold an event we hear stories from visitors about how useful they’ve found it and how much they’ve enjoyed it.
“The organisation of the event is a great team effort between council staff and colleague councillors, and we’re all proud of the difference they continue to make for so many.
“I’d also like to thank all our partners who regularly attend and help make the fairs such as success.”
The council’s fourth and final Golden Age Fair of 2018 will be held in Friday Bridge in December – date to be confirmed.
