CHILDREN averted a potential disaster at an activity day designed to teach them what to do in the event of a real fire.
The pretend blaze is the most dramatic feature of the Safety Zone – a series of activities for primary school children aimed at helping them keep themselves and their families safe - which visited Whittlesey fire station.
Other topics covered in a series of short sessions include the need to wear seat belts, the dangers of the Internet and bullying as well as safe shopping, food safety and looking after the environment.
Pupils from Coates Primary School were among 170 children from four schools in the Whittlesey area who visited the project at Whittlesey fire station.
Sarah Johnston, their teacher, said: “The children loved it. There’s a great variety of topics and they’re a brilliant way of getting them to think about their personal safety.”
The group was joined by Councillor Ralph Butcher, Fenland Council’s portfolio holder responsible for health and wellbeing.
The zone is a Fenland Community Safety Partnership project, organised by Fenland District Council and Cambridgeshire County Council’s Trading Standards with help from police, fire service and other organisations.
About 250 pupils from March and Chatteris visited the project at March fire station earlier this month. It comes to Wisbech in July.
