MEMBERS of the Fenland Youth Council gained first-hand experience of the democratic process in action at a national level when they were given a guided tour of the Houses of Parliament.
Eleven members of the Youth Council were given a potted history of the building and of how democracy works when they spent the day there, which included meeting up with North-East Cambridgeshire MP Malcolm Moss for a question-and-answer session.
The young councillors were accompanied by Councillor Steve Garratt, portfolio holder for young people and leisure.
Amy Herman, chairman of the Youth Council and pupil at Queen's School, Wisbech, said: "The historical tour of the Houses of Parliament was absolutely fascinating and it was very interesting to hear how Malcolm Moss became an MP. He told us he started out as a geography teacher, working briefly at the Queen's School. It was a fantastic day and provided us with an insight into how democracy works."
Cllr Garratt said: "Seeing democracy in action at a national level will, I'm sure, give members of the Youth Council a clearer idea of what it is to be responsible to an electorate and I hope it has strengthened their knowledge and commitment to democracy.
