AT the latest meeting of St Clement's Women's Club, members took over, giving the committee a night off. Brenda Girdlestone, acting chairman, welcomed everyone. Maureen O'Brien was treasurer, May Burton organised the raffle and Margaret Duncombe was minutes secretary. Janet Flowers organised the guest speaker, John Hughes, an artist from West Winch. Mr Hughes was an art teacher in London before moving to Norfolk on early retirement. His first local exhibition was at the Hoste Arms. More recently he was the artist in residence at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where large paintings of Seahenge and Hunstanton Cliffs are featured. He was honoured when the Royal Watercolour Society accepted two of his paintings for the 21st Century Watercolour Open Competition. Mr Hughes brought several examples of his work along, explaining what he tries to achieve, looking at light, colour and texture. He was thanked by Brenda Girdlestone. After refreshments, Maureen O'Brien organised a quiz entitled Thingbats devised by Margaret Halstead. Winners were Carol Pollendine and Carol Blackett.
