FIREMEN from the Fens were among those honoured at an awards evening by Cambridgeshire fire service.

Chief Fire Officer Tom Carroll said: "These awards give us an opportunity to publicly acknowledge and applaud the efforts of those who serve their community as members of the fire and rescue service

"It is always an honour to host the awards evening, and not only congratulate those collecting awards on their achievement, but also thank them personally for their continuous commitment to the service."

Recipients of the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal included: Malcolm Bean, 47, from Whittlesey, who joined Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service as a retained fire-fighter at Whittlesey Fire Station, where he has served since June 1985.

Howard Newton, 52, from Wisbech, who joined as a retained fire-fighter at Wisbech Fire Station in November 1985, was promoted to crew manager in July 1991, and is currently serving at Wisbech.

Peter Jones, 46, from Manea, who joined as a retained fire-fighter at Manea in October 1985, was promoted to leading fire-fighter in November 1993, and to sub-officer in September 1996.
