Pupils at Thomas Eaton Primary in Wimblington were excited to receive their free family tickets to a special showing of The BFG at The Light cinema.

The children in years five and six received the prizes as part of the Read to Succeed project.

The school returned the most Read to Succeed tokens when taking part in the summer reading challenge.

Steve Barclay NE Cambs MP said: “I would like to thank The Light Cinema for donating this fantastic prize and encouraging more children to read for fun.

In May, with the support of partners including the Bishop of Ely, local primary schools and libraries, Mr Barclay ran a charitable initiative which sought to improve literacy during the summer holidays.

The Read to Succeed campaign aimed to raise donations of new books from residents across North East Cambridgeshire.

The target was to raise 1,285 new books so that every year four pupil across the constituency would receive a new book, which in turn linked to the summer reading challenge being run by local libraries during the school holiday.

This target was smashed, more than 1,500 books were donated.

In the back of every book he donated a token, which children could take to the library when they participated in the summer reading challenge.

The prize winning schools who had the most children taking their tokens to the library were Thomas Eaton Community Primary School, Glebelands Primary School and Cavalry Primary School.
