The experiences of teenage evacuees living in Fenland during the Second World War will be the focus of a project made possible by a £40,900 Heritage Lottery Fund grant.

The Chatteris Young Creatives, with the support of 20Twenty Productions and partners, will research the evacuees stories and bring them to life in a film.

The Chatteris Museum and the Chatteris Community Archive Network will be on hand to help them with their research on the Home from Home project.

The film they make will be screened in the autumn and used as part of an educational resource pack in schools.

Katherine Nightingale, of 20Twenty Productions said: “We are thrilled to have received the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund.

“This project will support young people in the area to be active citizens and gain a greater understanding of local history and the courage needed during the war years.”

Robyn Llewellyn, head of HLF East of England, said: “Thanks to money raised by National Lottery players we are pleased to support this timely and creative project.

“This has been awarded through our Young Roots programme and will enable the future custodians of our heritage to gain a personal insight into a part of history which has had a lasting legacy for our communities.”
