THE Union Jack flies high over Fenland as villagers put up flagpole next to their war memorial in inauguration ceremony.
Whittlesey Mayor Councillor Kay Mayor lifted the flag in front of a small crowd in Eastrea after the flagpole was obtained by Pete Sennett, a member of the village hall trust committee. Money for the pole was raised by a door-to-door collection.
Professor Brian Ford said: “This is another new feature for Eastrea. Pete is to be congratulated on arranging the flagpole. I’d like us to look now at having a village sign, and perhaps some well-designed entrances to the village.”
Mr Sennett said: “Knowing how people can object to flagpoles, we have one like they have for show-houses all over the country. There are thousands of those, so we know they’re approved.”
