A POLICE officer described a spate of vandalism in a Fenland town as “disgusting, loutish behaviour”.

The comments came from PC Andy Harcup-Rudd as he appealed for information following vandalism in Chatteris.

Road signs were bent to the ground, an ornamental plough was pushed over, railings were damaged and drain covers were ripped up and thrown into gardens.

Walls and vehicles were also damaged in the wrecking spree in the early hours of Sunday (October 24).

The damage was caused in Station Street and along Huntingdon Road.

The criminal damage was the latest in a number of incidents in the town.

PC Harcup-Rudd said: “This is disgusting, loutish behaviour.

“The plough is a feature for the town, provided by those who take pride in their community and it is unfair and disrespectful to damage it in this way.

“The removal of drain covers from the road is very dangerous. Residents do not deserve to have their vehicles vandalised, or property damaged.

“Remember, what you see as a prank on a walk home from the pub can have a profound effect on the lives of the victims.

“These incidents have got to stop and patrols will be put on to catch those responsible.”

Anyone with any information should call PC Harcup-Rudd on 0345 456 456 4 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
