Commuters can assess the impact of using different types of transport between points on a railway line thanks to a new online tool.

The Think Travel Tool allows users to choose start and end points of their journey that are available on the Hereward railway line, which runs through Fenland between Peterborough and Ely.

Users can also benefit from the service, launched by the Hereward Community Rail Partnership [CRP], to compare environmental impacts of journeys taken by transport methods such as car and train.

This includes the amount of carbon dioxide emissions and air pollutants, the distance travelled between destinations, cost and health benefits.

Cllr Chris Seaton, chairman of the Hereward CRP and portfolio holder for transport at Fenland District Council, believes the new tool will encourage more people to think how they travel.

“The Think Travel Tool encourages people to think how they can make their day-to-day journeys more environmentally friendly, more cost effective and more beneficial to their health,” he said.

“It also uses data to compare the impact of different travel methods for journeys from the Hereward Line, helping people make informed travel choices wherever they go.”

The Hereward CRP is managed by FDC in partnership with local councils, train operators, railway user groups, station adoption groups and local residents who look after the Hereward Line.

The Think Travel Tool was commissioned by the Hereward CRP, with additional funding support from Greater Anglia and created by environmental data analysts Aether.

Alan Neville, Greater Anglia’s customer and community engagement manager, said: “It’s easy to get around East Anglia by train that doesn’t cost the earth, reduces your carbon footprint and will help to protect the region’s habitats and human health.”
