A busy road in a Fenland village will be shut for 10 weekdays next month while a long-awaited pedestrian crossing is put in place.

The works outside Lionel Walden Primary School in Doddington will result in High Street being closed from April 3 to 14 between 7.30am and 5pm.

Cambridgeshire County Council will be undertaking the planned improvement works as part of Doddington Parish Council's successful Local Highways Improvement bid for 2022/23.

A letter issued to residents states: "Works will take place outside of the school term-time to limit the disruption caused.

"Due to the nature of the works and to ensure the safety of the workforce and members of the public, High Street will be subject to a road closure whilst works are being undertaken."

In the letter, the council also proposes a "formal diversion route" which would result in a 28-mile round-trip detour via Ramsey and Warboys, whereas diverting via the March to Chatteris A141 bypass would take under 10 minutes.

The letter adds that the council will "ensure the road is re-opened outside of the programmed working hours.

"As with all works, there will be some noise associated and we will try to keep this to a minimum where possible.

"Some of the works are also weather dependant and if we are unable to undertake these tasks due to bad weather, we will look to return to site at a later date to complete when suitable."

A Doddington Parish Council spokesperson said: "This crossing is primarily for the use of the children, parents and carers that use the school, but will also facilitate a safe crossing for all residents of the village.

"The parish council is very proud that they have been able to facilitate the project, and look forward to its completion."
