Vandals have recently targeted various locations around Whittlesey - including a nature reserve and a foodbank.

Police are appealing for information following the incident of criminal damage at the Lattersey Nature Reserve and a foodbank serving the town.

The Lattersey Nature Reserve, in New Road, had walkways damaged after individuals jumped on the boards and smashed them.

Other parts of the reserve, which is around a 20-minute walk from the town centre, were also damaged.

This incident happened on April 5 between 3pm and 8pm.

Lattersey Nature Reserve is managed by the Wildlife Trust for Beds, Cambs & Northants.

The charity has now posted on its website: “Unfortunately, due to ongoing damage to the boardwalk we would strongly advise visitors to take care and adhere to any safety signage on site.

“If you witness any antisocial behaviour or damage being caused to the nature reserve please contact the police and the wildlife trust.”

A couple of days earlier, between April 2 and 3, Whittlesey Emergency Food Aid (WEFA) centre was also targeted.

Metal gates were pulled off and windows smashed at its home behind The Manor Leisure Centre.

The foodbank moved to a new, bigger location last November.

WEFA chairman, Cllr David Mason, who is also the Mayor of Whittlesey, said: “Fortunately, our operations were not affected in any way.

“A local chap repaired the damage and only charged us for the materials, which was very generous of him.

“But we have had two incidents happen recently, and we’re not sure if they’re attempted break-ins or vandalism.”

Referring to both incidents, a post on the Policing Fenland Facebook page said: “This is not the only damage caused around the town recently...

“... these two areas are there for the community to use and are sustaining damage from a small minority of the community ruining this for the majority.

“Officers will be continuing to conduct patrols around these areas.”

Anyone with information should report it either via the Cambridgeshire Police website or call 101.

The incident numbers are 35/24652/23 for the criminal damage at WEFA and 35/26691/23 for the criminal damage at the Lattersey Nature Reserve.

It is also possible to report anonymously through Crimestoppers.
