A Fenland village pub has received the worst possible food hygiene rating - but its newest landlords say they are "determined to bring the historic establishment back to its former glory".

The George, in New Street, Doddington, scored zero out of five overall following an inspection in mid-January.

The pub, which was taken over by new landlords in November 2023, was inspected under three criteria.

The Government’s Food Standards Agency deemed that, overall, ‘urgent improvement is necessary’.

The inspector said that, in terms of hygienic food handling, improvement is necessary’.

Meanwhile, when it comes to cleanliness and condition of facilities and building, and management of food safety, major improvements are necessary.

A spokesperson for The George said: "The food hygiene rating of zero has come a shock to us.

"Having only took over in November last year, we have worked hard to get this pub up to a good standard, as it wasn't left in the best condition by the previous tenants.

"Our efforts have been noted by the local community and regulars in this pub.

"Manager, Wayne Mitchell, has put in place stringent cleaning procedures and has trained all staff as to what to expect of them.

"This includes when staff sign off what has been done, and by whom.

"We took the decision to close the kitchen until we find a suitable candidate to take on the responsibility.

"The management team is determined to bring this historic establishment back to its former glory.

"We have a lot of support from local residents who want to see this pub thrive once more."

The George team says they has applied to Fenland District Council to reinspect the pub within the next three months.
