The March Society has delved into the history of the Fen Edge Trail.
The society’s recent meeting featured speakers from the Cambridgeshire Geological Society, Chris Donnelly and Henry Stanier, who discussed the trail's development.
The trail offers insights into how Cambridgeshire’s unique landscape was formed and altered over millions of years due to natural events like floods, sea movement, glaciers, and lagoons, as well as human activities.
The speakers showcased maps, diagrams, and walk guides highlighting various landscape features, including layers of limestone, clay, sands, and gravels.
Volcanic rock discovered in Warboys was also mentioned.
The Geological Society plans to release more walk guides, which will be available at www.fenedgetrial.org.
The March Society also held its AGM during the meeting, where Jennifer Lawler announced her decision to step down as chairman after 18 years.
Allan Whyte will take over the position, along with some new committee members.
The March Society’s next event is a Heritage Walk along riverside Nene Parade on Saturday, October 11.
The walk begins at 2pm at Wigstones Bridge.
