A Whittlesey primary school brought festive cheer to the end of term by celebrating a landmark birthday of one of the town's best-loved residents.
New Road Primary School celebrated the 100th birthday of Wally Newman, who celebrated the milestone on Christmas Eve, and also saw the presentation of a new history cup.
The Whittlesey school, part of Aspire Learning Trust, marked the occasion with an unforgettable celebration that brought together generations in a heart-warming partnership with Wally, a former Royal Navy sailor who served aboard minesweepers during the Second World War.
Earlier this term, Wally, who was awarded the Freedom of the Town by Whittlesey Council at this month's meeting, visited the school to share his remarkable wartime memories, captivating pupils with his stories and inspiring a renewed enthusiasm for history.
Moved by the children’s interest and curiosity, Wally generously sponsored a History Cup along with prizes to recognise four outstanding young historians and writers.
As part of the project, pupils wrote thoughtful letters beginning “Dear Soldier”, expressing their gratitude to those who served during World War II.
On the final day of term, Wally returned to school to present the History Cup and prizes in person.
The overall winner was Jace in Year 6, whose name will be engraved on the cup as this year’s champion. However, the celebrations did not stop there. In a festive surprise, pupils presented Wally with a birthday cake and card to mark his 100th birthday.

The school hall was filled with smiles as the children sang Happy Birthday, followed by We Wish You a Merry Christmas, while Wally blew out his candles to warm applause.
Headteacher Rob Litten, who also joined the celebrations dressed in festive attire, said: “It was a privilege to celebrate such a remarkable man at such a special time of year.
"This partnership has brought history to life for our pupils and created memories that will stay with them forever.”
In recognition of his life of service and dedication, Whittlesey Town Council bestowed the highest civic honour - the Freedom of Whittlesey - making Wally only the second person to receive this prestigious accolade.
His citation, which will be awarded at a date to be confirmed, will state the honour is for his outstanding contribution to town and country, and for his community spirit.
