'Scum' dumped three pigs in field off Lambshill Drove, March

A rescue mission was mounted on Wednesday afternoon, after a member of the public reported three pigs running loose.

Fenland's dog warden Shelley Munns, of Ravenswood Pet Rescue, was joined by a number of volunteers after Triovets in March received a call about the little piggies, which had been dumped earlier in the day.

Initial efforts left the rescue team slipping in the mud and struggling to round up even one of the porkers.

Writing about the incident in a post on the March Free Discussion Facebook page, Shelley explained she sent out an SOS to Triovets, which saw help arrive from three staff members, Jodie Woollard, Adrian Dodoiu, and Chloe Abbott.

However, the pigs, who were dumped in a field off Lambshill Drove, and could easily have made it onto to March bypass, proved more than a match for their would-be rescuers.

Eventually, one of the pigs was captured, much to the relief of all those present, but the other two were still at large.

A further appeal for help was put out via social media, and willing hands arrived from across Fenland, including Wisbech and Chatteris.

Six hours later, and five loaves of bread down, all three of the pigs, believed to be Kunekunes, were rounded up and taken to safety.

Tonight (Thursday), the trio are heading to a new home in Fenland.

Chloe said: "It is hard to say how old the pigs are or what breed, but we believe they are Kunekunes.

"It was quite a challenge, but we are grateful to everyone who turned up to help. It is great they have a new home, and will be staying local. I think everyone involved wanted to take them home."

Shelley also thanked everyone who helped in her Facebook post and addressed the person who dumped the pigs.

"To the scum who dumped them, don't worry, we picked up the pieces again!

"I know I say on a regular basis, but how many vets leave their work to come stand with two members of staff in freezing cold for six hours helping?"
