St Mark's Church at Friday Bridge, near Wisbech, has applied for planning permission to take down the structure, which towers over the village.
Historic England added the Victorian church to its Heritage at Risk register last year, saying this was because of serious structural issues with its leaning spire.
It added: "The spire's thin brickwork is deteriorating, causing leaks and drainage problems."
A planning statement said: "It is often referred to locally as our Pisa in the Fens, given the noticeable inclination of the tower with its spire."
The tower, which has developed a lean over the years as the ground beneath it moved, will be capped off with lead until funds can be found to replace the spire.
There is no suggestion the spire is in imminent danger of collapse, but the statement adds removing it "will inevitably reduce the prominence of the church in the landscape albeit possibly temporarily".
