A charming adaption of one of Britain’s most beloved children’s television programmes arrived in Cambridgeshire this morning.
In the Night Garden Live, at the Key Theatre in Peterborough for this weekend only, is a delight for parents with young babies and toddlers.
The gasps of amazement when each of the cuddly characters arrive on stage is heartwarming.
First comes a life-size Igglepiggle, then an equally as large and cute Makka Pakka (with his bicycle and sponge ready to wash faces, of course).
They, and, later on, Upsy Daisy, lead the family audience to join in with their song and dance routines – though they don’t need any encouragement.
While the story plays like an extended episode of the BBC series, 55 minutes feels like an ideal run time to prevent any restlessness within seats.
The staging, a mix of clever puppetry and recognisable props, is simple yet effective, especially when the protagonist sails along his boat.
There is plenty for sensory-seekers to enjoy, too, especially the musical stepping stones, while a magical moment near the end is sure to stay in your little ones’ memories.
Although £29 per ticket – at the cheapest price – is relatively steep, there’s no denying the charm of this adaption.
