THE days of free replacement wheelie bins in Fenland are over and from April if yours gets lost, stolen or destroyed it will cost you nearly £50 for a new bin.

Fenland District Council says a new bin will now cost you £20.14 but there will be a charge of a further £28.31 to deliver it.

The council believes its new policy will "make people more responsible for them".

The council says the costs of the 240-litre bins, which include VAT, need to be introduced for the next financial year, and will cover the replacement process of each lost wheelie bin.

Exact figures for the number of bins which needed replacing last year are not available.

The council's spokesman added : "The charge is for the cost of the bin, the delivery charge for the property and associated administration incurred during the replacement process."

The majority of fees and charges for council services are set to increase by three per cent.

The complete set of proposed fees and charges to be introduced on April 1 went before the council's cabinet yesterday with a recommendation for approval.
