It used to be said – but not in Whittlesey – that every dog has its day.

For in Whittlesey they amended the phrase some years ago to ‘every duck has its day’.

That day was today, Easter Monday, when the town turned out to witness the 7th annual mayor’s charity fund duck race.

This year’s mayor, of course, was on hand to signal the start of the race – an honour Councillor Ralph Butcher found one of his less onerous mayoralty duties of the civic year.

Starting such a prestigious occasion as this is always down to the three P’s, preparation, preparation and preparation.

Hence crowds witnessed 1,000 ducks making their way down the Bower assisted by an occasional spray of water by the fire hoses of Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue Service.

£50 was up for grabs for the winning duck owner and ticket 458 which belonged to local resident Alan Hobbs scooped the top prize, second place ticket number152 who scooped £25 was won by 6 year old Hollie Ayto and third place went to Grace Randall ticket 813 (aged 11).

Cllr Butcher thanked those who attended and those who supported the event including the volunteers including Mark Brown and his team from the fire service, St John’s Ambulance, canoeist Andrew Rodham, Robert Windle for the race commentary and Whittlesey town clerk Sue Piergianni for co- ordinating the event.

Forthcoming events also organised by Whittlesey Town Council include Concerts on the Cross
