FENLAND Council's environmental services team recently joined representatives from Cambridgeshire County Council (trading standards and road safety), the fire service, police, St John Ambulance and the Environment Agency to host a partnership event highlighting different safety aspects for primary school children in Wisbech.

The free two-hour session gave pupils the opportunity to meet the different services and learn in a fun way how to stay safe.

Pupils were spit into small groups and treated to a 15-minute session with each partner. Pam Manning, food safety officer, illustrated to the children the importance of food safety and hygiene, with some graphic examples of how things can go wrong if simple procedures, such as hand washing, are not followed.

The other services hosted sessions which included the importance of not talking to strangers, how to cope if there is a fire, basic first aid, the dangers of not wearing a seat belt, river safety and why it is important to be careful how goods are bought and sold.

More than 400 pupils attended the event over the week and greeted the sessions with enthusiasm. The quick sessions were all high impact to gave the children the opportunity to learn in a fun but effective manner.

Each section set a small quiz for the groups, and at the end of the day the team with the most points won a prize. Everyone who attended received a goody bag with a variety of safety related gifts to help them remember the important messages of the day.
