LONG-serving Fenland councillor Peter Skoulding and the former deputy head of Neale-Wade College, Peter Hewitt, have been awarded the MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours.

Cllr Skoulding is recognised for his longevity in local government and for his well-documented work as a March town and Fenland district councillor.

A former town mayor, Cllr Skoulding joined March Urban District Council in 1960 and, apart from a short absence through illness, has served as a councillor for most of the past 40 or so years.

Cllr Skoulding, 76, did briefly consider not standing again this year but agreed to do so after colleagues pressed him to offer himself for re-election.

At an age when many others might have considered retirement, Cllr Skoulding, has again taken on Cabinet responsibility at Fenland Hall for the finance portfolio.

One of many delighted with the MBE awarded to Peter Hewitt is Sue Young, county organiser for the Workers' Educational Association.

"Because Peter has taught for us for 40 years we thought we would nominate him for the MBE," she said.

"He is a much-loved, much-appreciated tutor, and is known so very well.

"When he was deputy head at Neale-Wade he did evening classes for us and, now he has more spare time, daytime classes - mainly history, but some architectural.
