‘A taste of the Wild West’ at March primary school as pupils learn about Buffalo Bill and line dancing

A taste of the Wild West came to March on Thursday (May 24) when Year 2 students held a barn-dance fundraising event at Westwood school.
More than 250 family and friends of students perched on hay bales to watch the children put on a display of line dancing that they had learned as part of their topic work on the Wild West during the last term.
Wanted-style posters, paintings of cacti and huge balloon towers adorned the hall and traditional Western tucker in the form of hotdogs was served.
Miss Reeve, Year 2 group leader, said: “Year 2 were able to combine their fundraising event with their education as the fun night came after a term of learning all about the Wild West including dessert habitants, what plants survive in different climates, Buffalo Bill and line dancing.
“The children have also created travel brochures encouraging people to visit the Wild West and recipe books of the types of food eaten by cowboys all to meet the learning objectives in the curriculum.”

Activities included pin the tail on the horse, archery, biscuit decorating, and children were challenged to knock over a pile of cans by throwing beanbags.
A cowboy themed photo booth was set up where parents and children could choose from a variety of props including cowboy hats, pistols, sheriff badges and moustaches to have their pictures taken.

The event, which was organised by staff and parent volunteers, raised more than £800 which will enable Year 2 to go on a school trip next term.
Miss Reeve added: “We hope to be able to take the children to Hunstanton in July where we can go rock pooling, see what we can find on the beach, play traditional beach games and enjoy an ice cream.
“Each year group holds a fundraising event annually and so far this academic year, the reception class held a bingo night, Year 3 held a car-boot sale and sponsored assault course and Year 4 organised a rainbow parade and balloon pop.
“The fundraising events help give children more opportunities for extra- curricular activities which are difficult to fund otherwise.”
