Ahoy there! Ship Inn at March plans to build a Ship’s Deck overlooking the River Nene

THE Ship Inn in March is planning to build a projecting decking area alongside the River Nene, creating an outdoor seating for pub customers that overlooks the waterway.

Architects say the proposed Ship’s Deck opposite the Grade II listed building in Nene Parade “should prove to be an added attraction for tourists, particularly those visiting by boat who berth at the moorings below.”

The decking area planned by landlord Paul Wing will include several safety features - with a slip resistant surface, and an extra child proof gate. Black railings with gold painted finials will not be easily climbable. The gate will be locked when the deck is closed, and the area will be covered by two CCTV cameras.

A design and access statement sent to Fenland District Council says that although customers will have to cross Nene Parade to access the decking area via the existing pedestrian gateway, “there are no records of injury due to impact with vehicles.”

It says that because the decking is a modest size - just over two metres by six metres - the number of pedestrian movements across the road “will not be substantial.”

Mr Wing refurbished the pub in 2010, and has since won regional recognition from CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale. He hopes the deck will be ready for use in the spring.

The architect’s statement going to Fenland District Council says: “It is Mr Wing’s desire to to use part of the bank to provide an attractive outdoor seating area for patrons of the pub to enjoy a drink while taking a break from their routines.
