Fenland District Council is tackling childhood obesity by organising a free 10-week course of activities in Whittlesey and Wisbech as part of the national MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition Do it) programme.

Shocking national statistics show that, if we don't act, 20 per cent of boys and over 30 per cent of girls will be clinically obese by the year 2020.

The council is working with organisations throughout Cambridgeshire to try to reverse this worrying trend towards increased obesity among young people.

The 10 two-hour sessions, which start on Monday, October 1, are free to families with overweight children aged between seven and 13.

Everyone in the family is encouraged to get involved and experienced staff will give vital information and training on diet, lifestyle, fitness, confidence and overall health.

Participating families will visit leisure centres in either Whittlesey or Wisbech twice a week and take part in fun learning activities, including games, swimming, interactive discussions and practical demonstrations on every aspect of adopting a healthy lifestyle.

Any families interested in getting involved should contact the MEND team on 0870 609 1405 and it will make sure your child qualifies based on age, weight and overall health. Alternatively you can contact the council on 01354 622517.

Cllr Steve Garratt, portfolio holder for leisure and young people, said: "We are very keen to get all young people involved in an active and healthy lifestyle and working closely with MEND is an ideal opportunity to encourage families to address obesity problems. We have embraced whole-heartedly this national initiative.
