VETERANS of the famous RAF Pathfinder Force held their annual reunion weekend at the Oliver Cromwell Hotel in March.
The former aircrew and their families from 156 Squadron enjoyed a dinner, and took the salute at a march past by March air cadets.
“It was lovely to welcome the Pathfinders back,” said Belinda Clark, hotel conference and banqueting manageress. “They are great fun.”
The 156 squadron was formed at Alconbury in 1942, and was one of four squadrons selected to form the Pathfinder Force; it was equipped with Wellington bombers and dropped flares and incendiary bombs to mark bombing targets. It played a major part in Bomber Command’s offensive during the Second World War.
After the war, 156 Squadron marked the dropping zone at Rotterdam and The Hague for the bombers engaged in dropping food supplies to the starving Dutch people.
During the weekend the 156 Squadron Association held its annual meeting and Squadron dinner. Veterans went to church at Warboys on Sunday morning.
