ANDREW Parrish thought that fiancée Kerrie Canham was joking when she said their baby's head popped out while he was driving the mum-to-be to Peterborough District Hospital.

"The next thing I knew his body was out," said Kerrie, after giving birth to Aled Mark Parrish in the back of a car at 12.35am on Friday. "It was the last thing I was expecting to happen."

And Andrew said: "I could not think straight at the time and did not even know what road I was on."

Andrew and Kerrie, of Burnet Gardens, March, were on the A47 and had just got to where the dual carriageway starts near Thorney when Aled, their first child, arrived.

Andrew said: "I pulled over and dialled 999 and an ambulance was sent out. The operator said to keep the baby warm and luckily I had some towels in the back of the car, so I wrapped Aled in a towel and laid him in his mother's arms."

It was the third time that 43- year-old Andrew, and Kerrie, 26, were heading to Peterborough that day.

In the morning they went to buy a computer, but shortly after arriving home Kerrie started feeling pains from her stomach.

She said: "I didn't realise the pains were contractions because I had never had a baby before."

Andrew added: "I phoned the hospital which said wait an hour to see if the pains went, but they didn't and they said to head over."

After the pains had stopped at about 9pm, Kerrie was sent home.

But Andrew said: "Two hours after getting home Kerrie was in pain again so I phoned up the hospital and they said to return - and she had the baby on the way over."

Baby Aled, who was born three weeks premature, weighed exactly 6lb and was kept in Peterborough Hospital for three days.

Andrew added: "The baby is now fine.
