A mum who suffered the tragedy of losing one of her twins during pregnancy has raised money to say thank you to the nursing team who cared for her and her surviving son.

Amy Farquhar raised £440 for The Rosie Hospital in Cambridge, with the money being split equally between the neonatal intensive care unit and the bereavement team.

The Doddington mum is raising awareness of twin to twin transfusion syndrome in which one takes most of the nutrients which deprives the other.

Amy said: “Our twin boys were diagnosed with this condition at around week 16 in the pregnancy, after my bump suddenly grew overnight and I couldn’t walk due to back pain.

“The syndrome occurs in a very small percentage of identical twin pregnancies, and it means that the twins are linked via blood vessels and one twin takes most of the blood supply and nutrients, leaving the other twin with very little.

“We were rushed to Kings College Hospital in London several weeks later after scans at Hinchingbrooke Hospital showed that the condition was quickly deteriorating, for an emergency laser ablation surgery with the professor who pioneered the procedure, Professor Kypros Nicolaides.

“In this procedure, blood vessels which connect the twins are lasered away, separating them and allowing them to have their own blood and nutritional supply.

“Unfortunately one of our twins Alfie was not strong enough to recover from the procedure and he passed away seven weeks later.

“Due to complications from the boys condition, my placenta fully ruptured and they were delivered by emergency caesarean section at 27+2 weeks, with Charlie weighing just 2lb 1oz.

“After four months in NICU, Charlie our miracle survivor came home and he is the biggest blessing in our life.

“He spent eighteen months on home oxygen, and has chronic lung disease as a result of TTTS, but this is very quickly improving.

“The Rosie Hospital are hoping to offer the laser ablation surgery in the future. Their neo natal unit took such wonderful care of our survivor, and the bereavement team dealt with every aspect of Alfie’s funeral, leaving us to focus on getting Charlie strong and healthy.”

Amy raised money by organising a raffle, with support from local companies like Shooters American Diner, The Golden Lion Stonea and Handmade by HelzBelz to name just a few.

She also received further cash donations.
