Arsonists torched two cars and a van in Wisbech which were in a locked compound at the front of a breakers yard.

Smoke engulfed the vehicles at a unit at the front of Wisbech Breakers in Weasenham Lane when fire crew attended in the early hours of Monday (5).

The road was closed as the blaze was tackled at about 2.30am.

On fire were a Ford Transit van, a black BMW X5 and a purple Ford Mondeo.

It took around an hour to bring the fire under control.

A police spokesman said the smoke was so intense that the hazard forced them to close the road.

A fire service spokesman said: β€œThe cause of the fire was deliberate. Anyone with information should contact the police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.”

The fire service arrived at the scene at 2.18am and returned to their station by 3.25am.

The cars did not belong to Wisbech Breakers Yard – they were owned by another man who has cars at the front of their unit.
