Mr and Mrs Mortlock, of Hawthorn Grove, March, met at March fair in 1948, and married seven years later.

The house was built by Mr Mortlock and his father on a plot of land which was given to his fiancé as a 21st birthday gift.

“We had a good start in life, and it’s meant we’ve been able to build our home and live in it for all this time,” said Mrs Mortlock.

The couple have three children and one grandchild, and say that the care and support of their family has kept them feeling youthful.

Mr Mortlock said: “The best gift we’ve ever received is our family – they mean everything to us and they’ve kept us young.”

The couple are celebrating their diamond anniversary by hosting a party at the Oliver Cromwell Hotel in March.

It will be attended by the couple’s family and friends, some of which the pair hasn’t seen for many years - something Mr Mortlock is looking forward to.

“I’m very excited to celebrate with our family and friends,” he said.

“We’ve got 50 guests coming, with some travelling over from as far as Somerset, so it will be nice to see them all again.”

The pair have lived in Cambridgeshire all their lives, with Margaret spending 25 years as a probation worker in Wisbech, and Neil working as a builder in March; he and his father helped to build landmarks like the town’s bowls club.
