What was in the Fenland news this week in 1966- IT'S happened again. People on their way to work early yesterday morning were amazed to see that Wisbech's gas holder had become the target for giant white lettered slogans for the second time in two weeks. The slogans were of a political nature and a spokesman for Eastern Gas at Wisbech said that tighter security measures were in the process of being taken to ensure that such an incident did not happen again. Two weeks ago the holder was plastered with slogans which referred to Councillor Harry Potter and resignation from Wisbech Borough Council over the Mayoralty row.- ALL is not gold that glitters, but the Wisbech and District Amateur Operatic Society's production of 'The Vagabond King', premiered at the Empire Theatre on Monday, was a carat gold presentation. For the hundreds of people, young and old, rich and not so rich, who have so far seen the show, few will disagree that it's a real smasheroo!- REPRESENTATIVES of Cambridgeshire County Council, neighbouring authorities and organisations in the town, gathered in the biting wind on Friday when Sir Harry Legge-Bourke, MP for the Isle of Ely, opened Whittlesey Urban District Council's St Mary's House, the new flatlets for the elderly in Gracious Street.Four years ago in the Isle of Ely about one eighth of the population was over 65, said Sir Harry, and by 1967 that would go up to about one seventh which meant 12,000 people. It was going to be a great problem for all communities, and the fact that Whittlesey was tackling it so well, was to the credit of the council.- KENNETH Cope, alias Jed Stone of Coronation Street, presented an Oscar to a March magician Professor Jock Dear, who, although he is now 80, is still hitting the headlines. The presentation was made at the Belle Vue, Manchester, when Jock was one of 15 artists appearing in the 1966 Command Performance. This is Jock's second command performance. In 1962 he appeared with Charlie Drake and Ken Dodd.
